OUA Contemporary Issues in Accounting SP2 2016
Major Assignment: Client Briefing
Written Brief 15% Weighting: 1000 word brief
Briefing Presentation 20% Weighting: 10 minute equivalent presentation
Groups: Individually or in pairs (2)
Due Date: 10 th July 2016 11.59pm
Please choose from one of the below topics to construct a briefing presentation and document.
Please note that the intended audience for this client brief/information is the senior partnership
team at the SA office of an upper tier accounting firm and the management team of one or more
of their valuable clients. This is something you need to keep in mind when constructing your
briefing presentation and your client brief document. This will affect how you present yourself,
the language you use (straightforward, professional, engaging) and the way you present the
information. Remember, the audience will have accounting knowledge but would like you to
apply your perspective to the research you uncover on the questions asked. Do not try to cover
too much - the audience are very busy people and your allotted time is 10 minutes and a
maximum 1000 word briefing paper in professional style.
You have the choice of 3 topics as follows.
_______________________
2
Topic Option 1
You are a graduate accountant of a second tier accounting firm and your senior partner has
approached you regarding concerns from a client.
The client, Mr William Smith is an investor whose primary income is earnt from investing in
listed companies on the Australian Stock Exchange. Mr Smith has recently had a meeting with
the partner and at this time expressed his concerns about the quality of information in the
general purpose financial reports that companies prepare. Mr Smith has suggested that the
preparation of these financial reports is merely an aid to accountability and has complained they
are of no use to potential investors like himself. Mr Smith has stated that the obvious way to
determine relevant information is to ask the statement users what they want.
In view of this statement from the client, your senior partner has asked you to prepare a brief
to explain to Mr Smith what you believe investors need. In doing so, you need to explain to what
extent these needs are currently fulfilled by conventional financial reports. It would also be
helpful to indicate possible improvements that would be required in financial reporting to meet
these needs.
You must present an engaging and informative 10 minute briefing for your senior partner to help
the client understand the nature of accounting in addition to providing the partner with a short
1000 word brief that he can also distribute to the accounting team.
Topic Option 2
You are a graduate accountant of a second tier accounting firm and a client has queried some
fees and asked you to explain the necessity for a Conceptual Framework. The client, Ms Mae
North is slightly frustrated and suggested that the reason for the Conceptual Framework in
accounting is to protect the accounting profession and its status, rather than improve accounting
practice. She believes that the Framework itself is not free from bias and hence the accounting
standards themselves are not and cannot be neutral. Her comments also focused on the
complexity of the Conceptual Framework and accounting standards and suggested that
3
accountants should present simple, abbreviated and uncomplicated financial reports to make
financial information understandable for as many users as possible.
You have since brought these concerns to the attention of a senior partner at the accounting firm
where you are employed and your managing partner has asked you to prepare a briefing
presentation on addressing the concerns of the client. You need to apply your judgement on
these issues but at the same time providing support for the Conceptual Framework. You will also
need to consider appropriate responses to all the issues raised by the client. You should explain
why the AASB has devoted so much time and effort to the development of a Conceptual
Framework and why you believe that this has been well spent. Your managing partner has
requested you to be sensitive to the needs of this client and present an engaging and informative
10 minute briefing in addition to providing a short 1000 word brief that can be distributed to the
accounting team.
Topic Option 3
At a recent meeting with a senior partner of the accounting firm where you are employed, a client
produced an article from a financial newspaper highlighting issues with measurement in
accounting. The article stated that “accounts must represent and reflect economic reality” It
went on to say that “at the core of financial accounting is measurement. There is no escaping it
if a quantitative representation of financial information in the form of financial performance and
position is demanded. The quantification and aggregation can be kept fairly simple with a
transaction based system that measures most items by reference to their historic cost”
The article also claimed that trials of previous measurement methods had failed in the early
1970’s and this was simply put down to an innovation and experimentation phase with
accounting measurement.
What concerns the client, Mr John Deep, is that the IASB proposed changes to its conceptual
framework in which there was more reference to different methods of measurement, including
fair value. After reading the financial newspaper article the client cannot understand why there
is a need to allow different measurement methods. The client is also unsure what is meant by
“reflect economic reality”. If historic cost is considered to be inappropriate, then why do the
4
accounting profession still use this method when perhaps it is suggested that this doesn’t seem
to be the case that it is appropriate.
Your managing partner has asked you to prepare a briefing presentation to present to the client
on the factors to consider when selecting a measurement basis and importantly as a recent
graduate to apply your judgement on what this means for the preparation of the financial
statements. Your managing partner would like you to be sensitive to the needs of the client and
present an engaging and informative 10 minute briefing in addition to providing her with a short
1000 word brief that she can distribute to the accounting team.

Format/expectations.
There is no specific format for this assignment – the presentation must be professional but you
are encouraged to use creativity as far as you deem appropriate to convey your message. You
need to use formal language in both written and audio-visual format that is understandable
and interesting. You will note that you are required to communicate with a specific target
audience - the client and senior people at the firm you are employed. This is a valuable skill
that is regularly used in accounting practice where accountants tailor their communications
approach to suit their audience –the target audience is clearly identified. Video recordings,
Prezi and similar professional formats are all suitable and the more attention given to how this
presents, the more engaging it will be for your audience. For the written brief a formal report is
not required. You should give serious thought to how a briefing would look in business to a senior
professional audience. You need to use formal language that is understandable and interesting.
It is important to undertake a professional briefing both in written and audio visual format 1 .
WRITTEN BRIEF: The guide for written submission is 1000 words and it should not generally be
longer than this. Penalties for assignments exceeding the maximum word limit will be
imposed at 10% per 100 words or part thereof in excess of 1,000 words. There is no
minimum number of words, but 1000 words provides a guide as to the depth and or
breadth of coverage you should be seeking to achieve however you may achieve this in less
words - this is preferable to ‘padding’ with excess words that do not stay in scope of addressing
the issue for the client.
The word count needs to be provided on a title page.
Ensure that you comply with Harvard referencing conventions in preparing this
assignment and that plagiarism is not an issue. You are expected to adhere to high
standards of academic integrity and all assignments submitted in this unit WILL be
checked for plagiarism, using text comparison software and other methods.
1 PLEASE NOTE: AN AUDIO-VISUAL PRESENTATION IS REQUIRED AS PART OF THIS COURSE - IF YOU HAVE
EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH PREVENT YOU FROM RECORDING/PRESENTING PLEASE CONTACT JOANNE
TINGEY-HOLYOAK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE OUTLINING THE REASONS, PROVIDING EVIDENCE WHERE POSSIBLE AND
ALSO A PROPOSED SOLUTION FOR SUBMITTING A PRESENTATION.

A high standard of presentation is expected. This is a capstone unit in a professional
qualification and it is expected that students are able to present a paper of professional
quality.
AUDIO VISUAL BRIEFING PRESENTATION
Should be care and consideration given to professionalism – can be via phone recording tools,
prezi, iSpring or many other formats.
Get creative! Role play! Have fun with it.
The presentation will need to be uploaded to a separate assignment submission link to the
written brief. If it is just a weblink to a Prezi, please put this on a Word document and submit
through the Learnonline site – just make sure your marker/coordinator can open, i.e. provide
any access/passwords needed at submission stage.
Developing knowledge and skills in the client briefing. As you work on this client written brief
and presentation, please keep in mind the knowledge and skills (learning outcomes) that it is
designed to develop. Learning outcomes are what graduates are expected to know, understand
and be able to do as a result of learning. Importantly, the professional accounting bodies were
consulted during the design of the learning outcomes of Bachelor accounting programs. Thus,
they give us valuable insights into the knowledge and skills that the profession wants graduates
to possess.
Your Knowledge. The skill to be able to integrate theoretical and technical knowledge of
accounting.
Your Judgement skills. The skill to be able to exercise judgement under supervision to solve
routine accounting problems in straightforward contexts using social, ethical, economic,
regulatory and global perspectives.
Your Application skills. The skill to be able to critically apply theoretical and technical accounting
knowledge and skills to solve routine accounting problem.
7
Remember that accounting employers consistently rank technical knowledge and problem
solving as among the most important skills that they consider when they employ graduates
(Graduate Careers Australia (graduatecareers.com.au)).
Your Communication skills. The client briefing also develops your communication skills. The
importance of communication skills in the professions and careers in business cannot be
underestimated.
When asked to nominate selection criteria, aside from relevant qualifications, that they consider
to be most important when evaluating accounting graduates’ applications, employers
consistently rank communication skills as the most important criterion (Graduate Careers
Australia (graduatecareers.com.au)).
You will note that you are required to communicate with a specific target audience - the client
and senior people at the firm you are employed. This is a valuable skill that is regularly used in
accounting practice where accountants tailor their communications approach to suit their
audience. The assessment will also develop your verbal communication skills, including the
ability to persuade an audience. Once again, this is a valuable skill in practice.
The skill to justify and communicate accounting advice and ideas in straightforward collaborative
contexts involving both accountants and non-accountants is also a learning outcome of graduates
of Bachelor accounting programs. Accountants need to be good written and verbal
communicators. They need to explain accounting advice and ideas to:
• colleagues from accounting and non-accounting backgrounds; and
• clients who may have limited accounting knowledge.
This requires good communication skills. Clients and colleagues may also need to be convinced
of the appropriateness of the advice they are given by their accountant. Once again, good
communication skills are needed for accountants to achieve this. Remember that
communication skills are how you demonstrate the other learning outcomes: your knowledge,
judgement and application skills.
A marking guide/feedback form will be provided separately.
