Has social media fulfilled its democratic promise? 代写
Assessment Item 3: Essay - 40% of total grade
The purpose of this assessment is to:
Develop your academic writing and researching skills
Demonstrate your acquired knowledge to contemporary examples of political communication.
Students will submit a 2,000 word essay (i.e. well-argued and supported with references) at the
end of Week 13 that demonstrates their knowledge and understanding of the theories and
contexts of Political Communication covered in the unit.
You should use at least 8 credible sources. Two (2) of these must be from suggested readings in
the unit outline and on Moodle. The other references must be from scholarly journals and
reputable textbooks found in the library. References to quality commentary and links to popular
culture sources, if relevant, are to be in addition to the 8 credible references, not instead of.
The essay is to be uploaded via the unit Moodle site.
All essays will be scanned using Urkund Plagiarism software.
An assignment cover sheet must be completed and uploaded with the essay, declaring that the
work is entirely your own.

It is the student’s responsibility to keep both an electronic and a hard copy of the essay.
The essay must be presented to a high standard with 1.5 spacing (see below).
An extension will be provided if the student has a doctor’s certificate or other evidence of inability
to complete the assessment task. Please contact your tutor EARLY if you are ill or facing other
difficulties.
Essay topics: Please note additional topics might be added depending on political events during
semester.
1. Do politicians need the mainstream media anymore? Discuss.
2. Analyse a political speech (confirm with your tutor). How did the political context, rhetorical
devices and techniques of argument contribute to making the speech effective or memorable?
3. Is there populism in Australian politics? Drawing on Esser’s (2016) framework of populism,
discuss the presence or absence of populism in Australian politics by drawing on a contemporary
example.
4. Has social media fulfilled its democratic promise? Discuss using contemporary examples and
academic literature.
5. Is satire undermining the credibility of politicians? Discuss using contemporary examples and
academic references.
6. Authenticity, politicians and social media. Compare the Facebook activity of two politicians of your
choice for a period of one week and apply Enli’s (2015) criteria of authenticity. Analyse and
discuss the findings.
7. Topic of your choice approved by your tutor.
Notes on essay-writing
This is a formal academic essay. Resources on essay-writing are provided on the unit’s Moodle
site. If you are unsure about your ability to write an essay, contact the Academic Skills Centre
at: http://www.canberra.edu.au/studyskills
There are many similarities between an academic essay and the Texas approach which you
might have used in high school. Start there to refresh yourself and then refer to the other
guides. http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Texas-Format-
Essay#Writing_Your_Own_TEXAS_Format_Essay_sub
You should narrow or tailor your essay using one or more contemporary examples. It is up to you
to state the scope and argument of your essay.
An in-text referencing style (author-date, Harvard, or APA) is a requirement of essays in
Communication (NOT footnotes or endnotes). The UC library website has excellent guidelines
and training courses. See http://canberra.libguides.com/referencing for detailed information about
how to reference sources and compile a bibliography.
Academic essays are built from your ability to critically analyse evidence provided by experts on
your topic. Secondary research is fundamental to your ability to construct your own argument.
You should use at least 8 credible sources as a minimum (i.e. not Wikipedia!). Two of these must
be the suggested readings of the unit. The remainder should be references from scholarly
journals and quality online texts/text books. Talk to the librarians if you are having trouble with
this.
