Rationale
This assessment is designed to assess your understanding of NZ firms' internationalisation
processes into developing countries, requiring you to investigate and explain whether NZ
firms actively engage in international business. You have on your desk three proposals from
firms looking to expand, however you only have the time and resources to write a response
for one company.
Proposal 1 is from Fonterra (www.fonterra.com). Fonterra sources milk from farmers,
collecting around 17 billion litres per year, representing around 86-87% of New Zealand’s
milk production. Fonterra also collects over 4.9 billion litres of milk overseas through
farmers and joint ventures. A wide variety of brands are established to cater for the needs
of different markets around the world. They are seeking to establish high nutrition and
health-oriented brand Lanka in the Sri Lankan market where nutritional commodities are
scarce.
Proposal 2 is from BurgerFuel (http://www.burgerfuel.com/nz/ ). BurgerFuel is a New
Zealand based chain of gourmet burger restaurants in different locations all over the world.
In the few years Middle East continues to experience major turmoil as a region but despite
this BurgerFuel has managed to increase their footprint by adding 2 more restaurants in
UAE, 2 in Saudi Arabia, 2 in Egypt and 2 in the new territory of Kuwait. Now the BurgerFuel
is looking to establish a gourmet burger restaurant in Lebanon. This restaurant will be
responsible for offering the items such as vegan/ vegetarian food, gluten-free, halal, and
some organic food products.
Proposal 3 is from ANZ Bank (www.ANZ.com). ANZ has largely operated within Australasia
and moving the Bank's focus into Asian countries where the bank will target the wealthier
customers who see value in using a foreign bank. In some countries, establishing a retail
presence/ full services bank from scratch would be too costly/difficult and therefore a retail
business/ high end service is a strategy for the future. Japan, Korea, and The Philippines
would be countries in this category.
Select the proposal you feel is most appropriate for the location you have chosen and write
a report to persuade the company that your chosen developing economy location is the
best place for them to expand.
