SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
This subject explores the strategic and operational issues involved in managing staff in the workplace. It examines the challenges facing
human resource managers in contemporary Australian organisations and seeks to develop an understanding of human resource
management practices in our continually changing social, economic, industrial relations, and organisational environments.
Recognition of the critical role of human resource management (HRM) in organisations has increased significantly in recent years. The
reasons underpinning this increased recognition will be explored in this subject and the objectives and purposes of HRM will be examined.
To undertake this successfully implies a need to appreciate the dynamic nature of the internal and external environments faced by
organisations. Throughout this subject an emphasis is placed on a strategic approach to HRM, in addition to the functional and operational
aspects. The subject commences with some ‘big picture’ conceptual issues before examining a range of relevant contemporary HRM
practices.
The subject places a substantive emphasis on theory in the belief that to be of long-term benefit, the knowledge of a human resource
manager must comprise not only a collection of skills that are immediately applicable at the workplace but must comprise also a deeper
level of understanding of the causes underpinning the challenges to be faced. With this approach, the human resource manager will
embrace new challenges of a dynamic environment and the knowledge acquired will have enduring value.

Upon successful completion of this subject, you should be able to:

Explain the basic concepts of human resource management (from both a theoretical and applied perspective) and demonstrate how
these make HRM a unique source of competitive advantage.
2 Discuss the need for organisations to facilitate the strategic partnership between management and employees.
3 Select and analyse relevant academic literature to provide critical analysis of HRM.
4 Summarise, analyse and organise case studies and research materials on a range of HRM topics through cooperative teamwork.

Description of Task
This is an individual assessment task.
The Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) is the national association representing human resource and people management
professionals. AHRI have over 20,000 members throughout the world and provide education and training services in HR and people
management and business skills. AHRI also organises world-class conferences which bring HR practitioners together and holds seminars
and networking opportunities all over Australia. AHRI also sets standards through accreditation of HR qualifications at universities across
Australia (including LaTrobe’s HR degree), conducts research into people management practices, and assists governments in the
development of policy and legislation that affects people at work.
AHRI have released a ‘Model of Excellence’, which explains the capabilities and behaviours of an ‘excellent HR manager’. This model
provides a conceptual basis for the accreditation of HR practitioners and training offered by AHRI and universities. The model identifies 7
capabilities that are essential for HR practitioners (see https://www.ahri.com.au/about-us/model-of-excellence). These capabilities are
being:
o Business driven;
o A strategic architect;
o An expert practitioner;
o An ethical and credible activist;
o A workforce and workplace designer;
o A cultural and change leader; and
o A stakeholder mentor and coach.
In this assignment, you are to select three (3) of these capabilities and address the following (in your own words, with referencing as
required):
o What does this capability entail?
o Why would it be important for a Human Resource Manager to have this capability? Draw on appropriate frameworks to support
your arguments.
o If you were applying for a graduate HR position, what evidence could you offer to show that you possess this capability? Draw
upon your own experiences, whether it be your work, university life, home life, volunteering or sporting experiences.
Please discuss each capability separately, under its own subheading. All reference material must be appropriately cited in the text of your
assignment. Include a separate reference section that includes the full citation information. Follow the style guidelines for the Academy of
